INTERNET AND NETWORK

Internet and Network

What is Internet?

The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide.

Brief History of Internet

The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for government researchers to share information which was known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network), the network that ultimately evolved into what we now know as the Internet. January 1, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the Internet.

Internet Services

Throughout time, internet has offered many services. Some of the these services are:
  • E-mail - Also known as electronic mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Example of email address is hamiar@gmail.com
  • WWW(World wide web) - Is an internet-based hypermedia initiative for global information sharing.
  • Chat - Is a real time typed conversation via computers
  • Social networking - A social networking service is an online platform that is used by people to build social networks or social relations with other people who share similar personal or career interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections.

Surfing the Internet

To move from place to place on the Internet searching for topics of interest using web browsers.
Web surfing has become a favorite pastime for many Internet users. The links on each page enable you to start virtually anywhere on the Web and eventually find interesting pages. The term surfing is generally used to describe a rather undirected type of Web browsing in which the user jumps from page to page rather whimsically, as opposed to specifically searching for specific information.
Before surfing the internet. You need to make sure that you are connected to the internet. There are two main types of establishing internet connection which are Wired and Wireless
Wired consists of modem, ethernet cable etc
Wireless is where there is no physical wired connection between sender and receiver. Radio waves and/or microwaves maintain the communications such as satellite, wireless

Connect to the Internet using Wired connection (ethernet cable)
  • Click on the START MENU and select CONTROL PANEL.
  • Select NETWORK AND INTERNET.
  • Select the NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER.
  • From the Tasks section on the left, select CHANGE ADAPTER SETTINGS.
  • Right-click the LOCAL AREA CONNECTION icon and select PROPERTIES.
  • From the User Access Control window, click CONTINUE.
  • Select INTERNET PROTOCOL VERSION 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click the PROPERTIES button.
  • Make sure OBTAIN AN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY and OBTAIN DNS SERVER ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY are selected.
  • Click the OK button to close the other open windows.
  • Restart the computer.
Connect to the Internet using Wireless connection (wireless)
  • Locate yourself in a property or public space that has a wireless router. I.e. Somewhere where a wifi signal is being transmitted.
  • Make sure that the device you're going to use is a.) Capable of connecting to the internet and b.) Capable of connecting to wifi.
  • Find out the name of the wifi network that the router in your location is transmitting. That's right, each wifi network has its own unique name. Sometimes this can be a sequence of random numbers and letters if it was set by default on the router — but people often personalize the name of a wifi network to help users identify its owners. E.g. "Hamiar wifi" or "zanlink_public".
  • Once you know the name of the wifi network, use your chosen device to find it. This will vary between devices (depending on whether you're using a Windows or Mac computer, or a mobile device). However, the process for connecting to wifi is broadly similar, following something along the lines of: navigate to wifi settings > turn wifi on > click on the name of your wifi network > click "connect".
  • Many wifi networks are made private, with access restricted via a password. If your chosen wifi network is password protected, at this point it will ask you enter that password. Make sure you have the password at hand, and enter it.
  • You should now be connected to wifi!

Network (Computer Network)

A network is a set of devices (often referred to as nodes) connected by communication links in order to communicate and share resources.

Types of network

Types of network are categorized in different classification, here we are going to look from area classification. There are three types of network classified by area which LAN MAN and WOMAN (😂😂!!! Hahahaha, that a joke) and WAN
  • LAN (local area network) - Is a group of computers and network
devices connected together, usually within the same building.
  • WAN (wide area network) - In comparison to a MAN, is not restricted to a geographical location, although it might be confined within the bounds of a state or country.
  • MAN (metropolitan area network) - Is a larger network that usually spans several buildings in the same city or town.
